Seyarto's Bill to Assist Sexual Assault Survivors Signed Into Law

I am proud to announce that the Governor has signed my legislation to support and assist survivors of sexual assault on California’s University and State college campuses.

AB 1968 requires the California State University (CSU) and requests the University of California (UC) campuses to standardize content on their websites so victims of sexual assault can quickly and easily find the necessary resources immediately following an incident.

Unfortunately, sexual assault is still pervasive on college campuses, with 13% of all students experiencing some form of sexual assault or violence. Among undergraduate students, 26.4% of females and 2.5% of males experience the traumas of rape or sexual assault. Despite improved availability of services, data indicates only about 1 in 5 college-aged female survivors received assistance from a victim services agency.

Currently, the UC and CSU systems host 32 independent university websites with links ranging from redirecting the user to the school's Title IX landing page to providing background information on what to do in the event of an assault without including contact information or resources. Unfortunately, this lack of clarity and organization limits their effectiveness.

A uniform online landing page created with the input of survivors and various professionals who work on sexual assault issues will ensure the information is relevant, useful, and accessible.

When a student experiences a traumatic event like sexual assault, immediate access to the right resources is crucial. AB 1968 emphasizes the importance of information resources on CSU and UC campuses to help survivors take control of their safety, health, and healing.

Before being signed into law, AB 1968 passed through both the Senate and Assembly with no opposition and bipartisan support.

It is my privilege to work together with my colleagues in Sacramento to accomplish some of our goals and deliver results.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve you.
