Purple Heart Day

Today is Purple Heart Day.

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the Armed Forces who were wounded or killed in service to our country by the actions of our enemies.

It is a medal given, not for achievement, but in honor of sacrifice.

The simple purple ribbon, trimmed with white, holding a bronze heart with the portrait of President Washington, denotes one of the highest respects we as a country bestow to our heroes. To this day, almost 2 million Purple Heart Medals have been awarded, many posthumously.

It was my honor to introduce ACR 12 to declare August 7th, 2021, as Purple Heart Day in California to honor the many service members and veterans in our communities who have been bestowed with this solemn distinction in recognition of their sacrifice.

Today, please take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart while serving and fighting to defend our freedoms.
