California’s highest-in-the-nation gas prices are setting records and are only expected to get worse.   The average price is now over $5 per gallon and more than a dollar above the national average.   On Saturday, right here in Riverside County, the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline rose 9.8 cents to $5.134, one day after recording its largest increase since July 2015.   A recent report noted that California’s taxes, fees, and regulations increased gas prices by $1.27 per gallon. Worse, that number is set to rise even more when California imposes another $500 million in…
Every March, in celebration of Women’s History Month, the California Legislative Women’s Caucus invites State Assemblymembers to select an outstanding woman from their district to recognize her significant contributions to her community. I am proud to honor Ruth Atkins as the 2022 Woman of the Year for our 67th Assembly District.   Ruth Atkins moved to the Lake Elsinore Valley in the early 1990s and immediately immersed herself in civic organizations, including the Lake Elsinore Historical Society, serving as a member of the board and later as Board President, a title she held for an…
February is American Heart Month.    Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in America, and sadly 1 in 3 women are diagnosed with heart-related conditions every year. However, according to the American Heart Association, close to 80% of these cases can be prevented through education and simple lifestyle changes.   We often worry about the well-being of our family members, but it is also important to take time to focus on your own health and self-care needs.   Please take a moment to review this helpful information from The American Heart Association:  Learn About the Factors…
Today I joined with many of my Assembly and Senate colleagues to motion for a vote to officially end the State of Emergency in California.   If California can host the Super Bowl, we are no longer in an emergency.   Under the California Emergency Services Act, the Governor is required to terminate the State of Emergency “at the earliest possible date that conditions warrant.”   In the event that this requirement is not upheld, the Legislature has the power to terminate the emergency by concurrent resolution.   Many Republican and Democratic governors across the country have rightfully ended…
I am proud to introduce my 2022 Government Reform Bill Package to bring more clarity and accountability to California’s state government.    AB 1687 clarifies that the governor’s use of emergency powers must be related to the emergency conditions. Current law gives the governor broad authority to suspend any regulation or statute during a State of Emergency. While it is assumed that these emergency powers are authorized for responding to the extraordinary conditions of a specific crisis, the law does not explicitly limit these powers.   This legislation would clarify that the governor’s…
AB 1400, California’s proposed government-run single-payer healthcare system, has been defeated. Due to lack of votes, the author decided not to put the bill up for a vote consideration on the Assembly floor, and with the legislative deadline ending today, this bill is no longer moving forward.   This bill would have put the state government, and an unelected and unaccountable nine-member board, in charge of your health coverage, and would have eliminated healthcare choice.  The costs of AB 1400 alone would drastically exceed the amount of the ENTIRE budget of California and would have…
We have a long way to go to improve public safety in California, but I am proud to introduce my 2022 Public Safety Bill Package to start some important conversations and make a difference where we can.  AB 1665 would make the crime of human trafficking of a child a violent felony and count towards California's Three Strikes law. Human trafficking is one of the world's fastest-growing criminal enterprises. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline receives more reports on human trafficking victims from California than any other state. Nonprofit groups estimate there has been a 185…
Right now, legislation is quickly making its way through the legislature that will dramatically change healthcare in the State of California.AB 1400 would create a government-run single-payer system called CalCare. Its companion measure, ACA 11, is its funding mechanism which would, with the approval of the voters, amend California’s Constitution to impose unprecedented tax hikes. If these pass, the government will be in charge of your health coverage. If that happens, here are some things to consider. Government-run health coverage would: Eliminate private insurance Eliminate Medicare…
This week I was proud to introduce my 2022 Veterans Bill Package to offer simple solutions to ensure California’s Veterans receive the benefits they have earned. AB 1629 seeks to relieve the children and spouses of our great men and women in uniform from the undue burden of taxed Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) payments. Much like a life insurance policy, SBPs are an optional benefit that military service members may opt to pay into. After their death, these benefits are considered a taxable income source. This bill would make the first $20,000 of payments from SBP tax exempt each year.…
